Do you know the name of the book or the Author? I've never heard of it, highly doubt that it works... but I midwives have a lot of knowledge so it's possible she's found a secret method. The question I'm curious about is how many people who try the method?
Would you , or would you not use a method that could guarantee you the gender selection of your choice?
I'm not sure about this author. She might be on to something, but if you want any information about gender selection you should try the following website. A couple of years ago I bumped into it and it has TONS of information about all the methods and testemnials (and surveys) of moms, what worked and what didn't.

Take it with a grain of salt! :-)To get a boy:- Have the husband eat mostly meat (less veggies), and the wife eats mostly veggies and a little meat.To get a girl:- Have the husband eat mostly veggies (a lot less meat), and the wife eats mostly meat (less veggies).I think they say it's something to do with the pH balance (acidity/alkalinity) in the sperm and in the vagina (something like that).Let me know if you have heard of this, or have tried this! :-)
