    Hey mammas

we are looking for new mommy greeter volunteers to host social events for our chapter. If you are a local mom (perhaps on mat leave or stay at home / flexible work schedule), we would LOVE to have you join us

you can volunteer as much or as little as you like. The best events are usually things that you already do with your little one i.e. stroller walks, park meet ups, coffee chats etc. Of course with COVID, our events a little different these days -- outdoors, socially distanced and online. We hope that things return to normal soon so that we can get back to our usual programming, but until then we follow all the recommendations 🙂

We have a private group for our volunteers here where we discuss ideas and help cover events. If you are interested, feel free to PM me and join!

Understanding Your Toddler: Understanding Your Toddler: Understanding those repeated behaviours and how to go with the flow.

Toddlers:  Tender, Terrific, and Tenacious!  They dig in - NO! - throw tantrums, then ten minutes later melt your heart with the most honest hug or act of kindness.  They tumble and get back up again. They dump out the tidy contents of a drawer and then sit in it looking pleased. They cause us to lose sleep and to lose our patience. They are also masters of observation, scientists, spiritual gurus, and our future.  Understanding your toddler can help avoid some of the fuss and frustrations of living with them, especially during COVID.

    THE ADOLESCENT BRAIN UNDER CONSTRUCTION:

This presentation will explore what has been learned about the brain development and how environment and experience play a key role in this development. Risk taking, novelty seeking and drive for rewards are going to be explained as typical and normal behaviours in adolescents. However, this is a time of extreme vulnerability and with it a heightened risk for the development of mental health disorders. We will also explore how social media and other stressors may be contributing to the apparent increase in anxiety being reported by young people.

Adolescence is the period of transition child to young adult, specifically 8-20 years of age.

    Are you a parent?
We recommend this workshop for parents with kids 6-16 years to know what to expect and how to support your child as they transition through the 3 stages of adolescence.

Are you a professional who work with parents & children?
This workshop is geared towards professionals with who work with parents & children of all ages and especially significant for those working with children ages 6 years of age and older.

Self-Reg: Parenting in the Pandemic : This is a recording of the live session. You will receive the video link once your registration is complete.

Parenting is often challenging, even more so these days as parents navigate the changes, uncertainties and anxieties associated with reschooling children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Stuart Shanker, author of Self-Reg (2016) and Reframed (2020), will introduce Self-Reg, a fresh approach that offers parents a new and more hopeful way of understanding and addressing the unique stressors children (and their parents) are facing during this unprecedented time. Dr. Shanker says recovery—how well we can stabilize after dealing stressors and challenges— is one of the keys to responding to stress in ways that promote growth and learning. “The more effectively we can recover from the energy expended to deal with a stressor, the more primed we are to deal with the next stress, and the next, and the next.” Topics will include:

    • the impact of excess stress on our brain activity, and in turn our energy, tension and behaviour

    • the five domains of self-regulation

    • the difference between self-regulation and self-control, and between misbehaviour and stress behaviour

    • Self-Reg: Dr. Shanker’s five-step method for understanding and managing stress, energy and tension

    • co-regulation: the importance of relationships

    • the importance of Self-Reg for parent well-being and effectiveness

    Speakers

    Dr. Stuart Shanker

Dr. Stuart Shanker (D.Phil) is a Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Psychology, the CEO of The MEHRIT Centre, Ltd., and founder and Scientific Director of Self-Reg Global Inc. His latest books are Self-Reg Schools: A Handbook for Educators (2019) and Reframed: Self-Reg for a Just Society (2020)

Over the past decade, Dr. Shanker has served as an advisor on early child development to government organizations across Canada and the United States, and in countries around the world. During this period, he became increasingly interested in the impact of excessive stress on child development and behaviour.  Dr. Shanker’s five-step Self-Reg model, The Shanker Method®, is a powerful process for understanding and managing stress in children, youth and adults.

In 2012 Dr. Shanker founded The MEHRIT Centre as a Self-Reg learning and information centre. Dr. Shanker commits considerable time to bringing the research and science of Self-Reg to parents, early childhood educators, teachers, educational leaders, health practitioners and communities through presentations, master classes, online courses, webinars, publications, social media and blogs.

This workshop is geared towards parents with children aged 0-4 and  those who work with parents of children ages 0-4.
