Is anyone teaching  or has anyone taught their baby sign language? Have you had much success?

I was reading an article about signing and am wondering how much effort it really takes to do this. DH and I did start and try with DD but we felt like we had to learn the sign language first, and of course signing did not come naturally or easily, so we did not get very far.

Yes!!! It totally works and it's fun, rewarding and creates communication flow even before the little people can speak.   They do this naturally anything, we teach them how to wave hello and so on.

Baby Signs are just an extended vocabulary of signs , you can make them up or get a book to use a guide.  It makes easier to understand what they want, when they need to go to the bathroom, airplanes, butterflies and on and on...

I've read that it helps with the transition to words later and I find that communicating with signs keeps the intimacy going.  And, they love the interaction and engagement.

In terms of effort, I always believe the effort is worth it.
    :)

i have teached my DS signs such as milk since he was 3 months old. At about 6 months, when I asekd him about milk, he would know what i am talking about. I believe whatever we teaches our children, they'll benefit from them.  After extended researched on baby signs languages, i have recently became a baby signing instructor.  I am signing wiht my DS while singing some songs and trying to teach him more vocabulary such as apple, cereals, birds, cats, etc. He seems to enjoy seeing me moves my hands and fingers.

My LO is 11 months now, I've been signing with her since she was 4 months. It's not a lot of work but it takes a long time before you see any results... She started didn't sign back until 9 months but now it's part of our daily vocabulary. She understands English, French and sign language. We've never taken a class, I learned all of it from the internet and books. I definitely think it's worth it and would recommend it to anyone.

I started teaching my son sign language at about 8 months. I was amazed how quickly he was able to learn the signs for milk, water, cereal, all done, sleep, etc. He was able to communicate the basic day-to-day signs to me. Unfortunately my husband wasn't so quick to learn so he didn't know my son wanted food until he gave my husband the bib!! LOL

Anyone have suggestions of baby signing classes or is it better to teach yourself?

I just borrowed a book from the library to teach my son. The basic signs are quite simple to grasp. There are also DVDs from my library and you can also find clips on YouTube.

    Hello Everyone,

I am a certified instructor of the Baby Signs Program.  I became one because my son was born premature and had speech delay.  He didn't start talking (not even calling me mom or ma) until almost 2 and a half.  We took a class before he turned 2 and started signing with him.  I was so surprised by how much it helped us communicate.  He no longer threw tantrums at me because I didn't know what he wanted.  We had gone through very difficult times because by 18 months, he already had his own mind and knew what he wanted but for us, it was just babbling and pointing.  It was a very frustrating time.  However, with signing, he learned to ask for things politely. Always sign Please and Thank You.  I also taught him Sorry, so whenever he did something wrong and got me upset, Sorry is the sign.

Right now I am signing with my 7 month old daughter.  She doesn't sign yet but will let me know by smiles or turning away as yes or no. And because my son knows how to sign, I expect these two to be signing with each other soon.

If any of you would like to learn more, I hold free info session.  I also have parent's workshop as well.

You can also sign with your children at home by watching videos and reading up on books.  There are many programs out there that you can try.  Classes will be more fun for you and your children, with interaction and a reason for moms/dads to leave the home and do something together with your child and get some fresh air too  :)

You can find information about the program that I teach here:  www.babysigns.com

If you would like to receive sign of the day, contact me with your email address and I will forward you a sign every day.

    Happy Signing!

    Joan
