Breastfeeding with baby #2 after issues with baby #1? Were they similar?

I had a lot of issues breastfeeding my first little one and after finally going to the Newman clinic ended up on Domperidone, lecithin as well as their nipple ointment for all the damage I had during the first few weeks.  I also had Raynauds/vasospasm.  I persevered and kept feeding for 12 months despite feeling traumatized the first 4 months!

Did anyone have similar issues with their first child and experienced the same again the second time around, or did you find you didn't have the same challenges with baby #2?

I'm just trying to prepare myself better for this time and would appreciate anyone sharing their experiences for their second baby.

    Thanks in advance!

Congrats on baby #2. Wow you have some perseverance with the breastfeeding, good for you :)

I had a lot of issues with DD1 - bad/ no latch, so I pumped for the first 6 weeks, and took Blessed Thistle/ Fenugreek for low supply. Once the latching was sorted out (around 5 weeks), I let her nurse on demand, so my supply regulated itself and everything was fine from there. The York Region lactation consultatnt gave me a nipple shield to teach her how to latch, so I had no nipple pain at all.

With DD2, I had no problems with her latching on (she was born at home and she latched on straight away and suckled for the first hour after birth). However, I did have some serious nipple pain for the first three weeks - lansinoh is your friend! My milk supply is great and no problems (no herban supplements this time around)

So, different experiences for sure but it all worked out. That being said - I think you can never be over-prepared. Breastfeeding is a two-way relationship, and whilst you may have some experience, baby has to learn, too. Good luck!

With baby #1 I had cracked and bleeding nipples for about 4 weeks. I was uneducated and stubborn about asking for help. I figured things out on my own and eventually got the hang of things. I didn't feel like baby was satisfied a lot of the time though so I supplemented with formula. Little did I know that doing that wasn't helping the problem at all. I stopped breastfeeding that baby when she was 4 months and her dad had passed away. I was away from baby 5 days and stress took over. Nursing went out the window.

With baby #2 I described the nipple feeling "like breaking in a new pair of shoes". I wasn't in pain but I was tender. Breastfeeding this baby has gone much more smoothly. She is 6 months now. She's a good weight, a happy baby and sleeps well. I plan to continue breastfeeding until she's about 9-12 months. I think having the computer to google questions and having the support of my husband and baby's dr. has made all the difference.

Good luck!! I 100% think that baby #2 is easier to nurse.
