Are you tax enough on your maternity EI benefit?

    After completing my 2010 tax return not too long ago...we were into a big suprise...I owe the government almost $2000 tax for my materntiy EI. This is a total suprise to us. I was on maternity most of the year (Jan to Dec), I only returned to work in the middle of Dec 2010. We were already living thin when my income was reduced (on EI benefit), and now we owe the addition $2000. Totally not called for.

    Just want to let those whom are on Maternity leave right now to be awared of this for the 2011 tax return.

    I'm in Ontario and I owed a lot from being on mat leave. I think in part I wasn't taxed enough on my EI benefit AND the top-up from my employer. Luckily I knew about this in advance and I bought some RSP's to offset the cost but I still owed $1600.

    No, you are not taxed enough, I had similiar situation to the other mom who posted before me. I ended up with around 2000 dollars owing, so the best would be to contact them and ask to be taxed, if it is possible.
