How old was your baby when s/he got her/his first hair cut?
Also, I'm looking for recommendations on kids hairdressers. Are they worth the extra cost?

My first was well over a year old before we got his first cut, but our second has really goofy bangs that hang way down into his face, so we just got his cut a couple weeks ago, and he's ten months old.

We go to Silly Scissors in Newmarket at the corner of Bayview and Mulock.  It's relatively inexpensive and they have toys and movies to interest the little ones.  They also have an adult chair if you want to get your own cut while you're there!

I've also heard that Beaners is a great place too - it's on Mulock I think, also in Newmarket.
    Hope that helps!.

I have given my almost 2 year old home hair cuts 4 times by now. The first time was just before his 1st birthday. I did require my husband's help (to stop him from moving to much), the booster seat with the tray (to keep him in the seat) plus playing his favourite DVD during the cut.

The first 2 haircuts were so-so but I'm getting better at it I think. There are YouTube videos on how to cut baby's hair which were informative to me.

The most important thing I find is to use a pair of good hair cutting scissors. Kitchen scissors unfortunately won't do for a twitchy child. I bought mine at Fairview Mall at a store that sells knives, keys, scissors and did engraving. They weren't professional grade of course but much better than kitchen scissors. I think they were $16 (on sale) about 15 years ago. The professional ones are at least $100 each.

There's a kids' barber place at Markville called "Lemon Heads" (I think) with cute car-shaped and rocket shaped seats. Last I checked, they charged $20 for your child's first haircut, and will give you a keepsake box with a ribbon tied around the first bunch of hair they cut off of your child. I've never been there but my friend who has thinks they're great.

I give my daughter home haircuts. She had no hair as a baby until she was a year and a half, and at that point, she had cute curls at the bottom. But because her hair was so short, it looked like a mullet. I thought her hair would finally be cute once these curls were at the bottom of some longer hair, but I couldn't hold out long enough (I really didn't like the mullet). So her first haircut was around 20 months.

My son, unlike my daughter, has lots of hair and as a boy, he, in my opinion would look better with the conservative boy's haircut; that is, short. So he will probably get his first haircut soon (he's 9 months) as it's already grown past his ears. My husband will probably cut his hair as I don't have a good handle on how to give a boy's cut, but if not, we'll probably go to a barber.
