Is there anyone here in Thornhill (or area) that homeschools, or is considering it?

My husband and I are considering homeschooling.  Our daughter is still quite young (14 mths) but we're looking at all the options available, especially because we're not keen on having her in the public system.  What has your research brought up so far?  Are there homeschooling groups in Thornhill?  How old are your children?

My son will be 3 in September, so I also have time. I've read about homeschooling and it makes a lot of sense to me.

Have you read any books by John Holt?  He has great insight on how children learn, and how traditional education can stunt their natural learning capabilities.  I've been reading about the Montessori and Reggio methods also - incorporating very basic techniques into our daily routine (ie teaching how to dress, self feeding, basic cleaning, etc.)  I imagine your son is at or has well passed these areas so there's other great ideas from practical how-to books like "Teaching Montessori in the Home" by E. Hainstock.  If you find homeschooling groups in York Region they'll likely welcome you even though your son is still pre-school aged. If you're interested in sharing your findings, please get in touch :)

Thank you for the tips on the books, I will check them out. How/where do I find the York region Homeschooler's group? Thanks again.

    Hey Erin!

The groups I've come across so far seem to be internet-based, but I'm sure there's potential to meet face to face once you decide which group you'd like to join.  The first link below outlines options in the Toronto/York Region area as far as home school support groups go.  I don't know if you're religious/non-religious so feel free to hunt around as there seems to be groups within both categories. The second link is an unschooling channel through YouTube that may have some more research information. I haven't looked into it yet myself so I don't know what type of info you'll find there...

And of course there's always the Ontario Federation of Teaching Parents which you may already be familiar with. http://www.ontariohomeschool.org

Let me know if any thing interesting comes up from your end - ie books, links, groups, etc.

    Thanks!
