Parenting styles (are you a superior Chinese mom?!)

Have you read the excerpt from Amy Chua's book about "Why Chinese mothers are superior"? Are you a Chinese mother - by parenting style or ethnicity - and what do you think of the article?

It's made me think about my parenting style and how my mother's parenting style affects how I parent (oh no, am I becoming my mother!)

I've been reading Barbara Coloroso's "Kids Are Worth It" and find her three parenting styles - brick wall, jellyfish and backbone - quite apt (you can read a brief summary of the parenting styles on the Alberta Health Services website). I guess Amy Chua has a brickwall family.

So... what's your parenting style and how hard is it to change? Is it something that is learned or it is what it is?

My Chinese mom had a very rigid parenting style which I really didn't understand throughout my childhood. Now that I'm a parent, I can see what she was trying to do. There were good things that I have adopted from my mom's parenting style: e.g. hard work, commitment, dedication, consistency, being organized (I try to be but not really successful), etc.

I think I am  more flexible and relaxed than my mom about some things. I try to observe my child more and see where his interests and strengths/weaknesses lie, instead of always dictating everything in his daily routines. I hope and pray that I'm doing the right thing for my child in giving him boundaries but letting him roam inside it!

I think parenting style is learned from our parents as well as how we felt as a child. And moms these days are reading up on a lot of parenting books too to help themselves be better moms.
