Cursed pacifier!

My 5 month old takes a pacifier to sleep. The problem is, when it pops out, she wakes up and turns her head from side to side rooting for it. She's still currently swaddled for sleep, so she cannot retrieve it herself, and even when she does get her arm(s) out, she doesn't have the coordination to find it, pick it up and put it in her mouth. If I don't swaddle her, it's even worse as she startles herself awake all the time.

Have you had this problem, and how did you 'fix' it, or how long before baby is able to figure it out on her own!

We start out not letting our son sleep wth the paci... he would suck while we were reading a book and going thru the bedtime routine, but we took it away before putting him to bed.  I didn't want to be waking up to give him the paci on and off every night, and I wanted him to learn to sleep without it.

That worked great until 6.5 months when we traveled to the Caribbean.  He was cutting his first tooth, got a cold + ear infection, and away from home and our normal routine.  He needed the paci for comfort to sleep under those circumstances, so we allowed it.  He was old enough to feel around in the crib for it if he needed it in the middle of the night, and we put 3 in the crib to make easier to find one.  I think I went into his room to seek out and pop in paci maybe 5 times in total, and he's 14 months now.  We plan to wean the paci after our next international trip this winter.

    Good luck!

    Hey

I had the same problem with my daughter at about the same age.

I was getting up six to seven times a night to put the pacifier back in her mouth.  It was getting to the point where I was sleeping less and less.  So my husband and I decided to take away the pacifier from her cold turkey.

It took one night of alot of crying, but that was the worst of it.  She 'forgot' her pacifier rather quickly and began sleeping much better.

They become dependant on the pacifier and once it falls out they wake up and cry for it....so this way they learn to self sooth sooner than later...which is good for long term sleeping.

    Hope that helps.  Good luck

Have you tried a WUBBA NUB.....basically it's a pacifier sewn onto a small stuffed toy. My daughter could hold on to it better. They run about $13. If that seems crazy I actually sewed her pacifier to a small beanie baby and that worked too .....now she wants her "froggie" all the time!
