    Hey everyone,
My 4 year old started school this September. Her teacher informed me that she is very quiet, slow, and appears day dreamy. She does not respond to her instructions either. The teacher says she often has to help her and guide her through activities. At first I though its going to end soon since she was sort of babied at home but it hasn't changed much. Just a little. She also doesn't appear to b participating like the others. Some of it is personality but she is not like that at home usually. Quiet chatty actually.. Anyone know of any centre or a program where I can enrol her to come out of her shell. She loves going to school all the time and is very excited to go but she isn't progressing socially like the others in class.
    Thanks guys!

    Hi Hina,
Just want to let you know my experience with my oldest son. I remember when he first started JK, he was super quiet, never put his hand up and just didn't want to participate. At home, he was totally different. I think he's just not comfortable in a new environment. When he went to SK, he came out of his shell. Part of it was having a great teacher (different one than JK), part of it was because he knew what to expect now that he had a year of experience in JK.

I personally don't know any programs. But if you feel that you want to find something for her to enroll in, by all means. Maybe ask the teacher more questions and ask if there is a cause for concern. Sometimes kids just need to adjust and they will be ok next year. Hope this helps :)

    Hi Hina,

I couldn't tell from your post where you are located, but the program that I have experience with is called "School's Cool". It is run in many locations across Ontario and Manitoba, including school boards and early years centres. It is a school 'readiness' program for children aged 3-5, and we enrolled our son in the summer that he turned five. (he was July baby). We opted to skip JK with him due to our feeling that he wasn't ready yet, placed him in School's Cool over the summer, and then straight into SK in the fall.

Our shy, not very verbal, anxious-of-anything-new son thrived within the School's Cool program. (after a period of adjustment, of course!) He then went into SK with confidence and excitement. I can't say enough about what this program did for him.

Not knowing your daughter, I don't know if she is just having trouble adjusting to all the new routines in her life and classroom, or if she has other issues that need to be considered. But she is only four, with a whole other year of kindergarten to get ready for the rest of her school life. If you can get her into a summer program somewhere close to where you live, you may find it makes all the difference for her.

    Good luck!
