Do you have to pay for ultrasound photos?

After the check-ups, the technician would ask you if you want a picture of the baby?  Did you get and did you pay?  I'm skeptical because twice I got photos free and other times I had to pay $5 per print-out, and at one time pay $10 for a CD with the still-shots of the fetus. Is it actually legit like having your photo taken at Loblaw or Sears?

Interesting topic.. I was also given a few photos for free in one place and when I did yet another ultrasound they asked for $5 for each photo (!) every time. When I asked my doctor about it, he said they don't have to print the photos so they charge a small fee. I think that if some labs can give it for free, so can the rest. Anyone has a better insight to this?

I had a difficult pregnancy so I had to go for almost weekly ultrasounds.  Every so often, I would ask for a pic and had to pay $5 (this was at Mt Sinai Hospital).  Because I was there so often, they would sometimes give me one for free but they made it clear that they were giving me a freebie.  I asked my OB once about it and he told me that hospital funding is so low and the cost of supplies so high, that he wasn't surprised they were charging for it.

I work at a diagnostic imaging center and can answer this.

All prints should be charged for.  COST!!!  All departments have this policy.  However some technologist will print them off for free and not report the service.  Basically it all depends on the mood/friendliness of the technologist.
