How do you cut nails on a 9 month old baby?

    Hi,

My daughter Eva has become so active now, that basic things like changing a diaper a big challenge. She just cannot stay still for a moment.

I am getting really challenged at cutting her nails. Doing it during her sleep is not an option, because she is such a bad sleeper. So I now sit her in the high chair and try to do it, because at least her body is fixed in that space.

I am sure there must be a better way. Would anyone share?

The only thing that has helped us cut nails - BUBBLES! My husband would blow lots of bubbles while I cut the nails. And I did have to use just a tiby bit of holding force, because wiggling around is not out of the question..

Sounds interesting, but I'm mostly taking care of Eva on my own - my husband works late hours often. So I need to find a good way to do it myself...

Hi Anna!  Geez, one of the most tricky tricks moms have to learn indeed!  Well, if there are no issues on asthma you can try nail filing!  It will surely trim your little angel's fingernails nicely without the motion sickness of you focusing on those tiny little buds while honing in a piece of blade. So easy, you can even find that piece of cardboard in your infant grooming kit. Just wash or wipe off the little powder stuff afterwards. Voila!  Fine tiny fingers ready to take on the world again.

    Hi Anna,

Maybe bubbles isn't the solution for Eva anyway? I know Liam HATES nail filing..

I find another thing that worked was counting. He now knows that on three we make the cut. And he likes to use the other hand to look through a book.

    Hope that helps :)

I groom the nails of my 9 month old one hand or foot at a time. That is how long he would stay still for. I do entice him by letter him play with a hairbrush in the other hand. He loves running his fingers through the brush. And after the nail cutting, I comb his hair and let him play with the brush again. Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the replies ladies.

    Great ideas.
I just would like to add that I have recently bought a special nail cutting & care kit for Eva.  All items do not have any sharp edges, which is much better than working with the usual set.

I have to say that filing her nail is kind of unrealistic at this age, so that's probably a useless piece in this set for me.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

I wait until Gabe is really tired and I take him for a walk in his stroller. I then clip his nails once he falls asleep. I have done it in the middle of a side walk, and outside on my drive way. It works every time. LOL

I make a game out of it...every time he tries to pull away i shake his arm a bit and make funny noises and stuff...he starts to giggle and it gives me just enough time to do a nail or two before he tries to pull his hand away...I just repeat til Im done.
