How do you soothe your baby's cough/colds?

Seasons change, and oooh, that stuffy nose and whooping cough, and sometimes low grade fever on our little ones keeps them up (and us!) up all day & night and having a miserable time.  But despite that, our meds are kept in the cabinet tightly for at least 3 days unless the symptoms accelerate with fever.

For coughs & colds, home remedies are the best.  What's your home remedy or how do you soothe your baby's cough & colds?

    Here's mine:

    1. Keep good humidity level in the home (ours would be at 10 to 20)

    2. Keep the bedroom doors open at all times for air circulation. I also maintain a ceiling fan that runs at low speed and reverse motion.

    3. Meal times are difficult at these times so small frequent snacking are more manageable: crackers, fruits, and other light comfort food.

    4. Keeping them warm with flannel or fleece clothing, socks, etc.

    5. They usually have the energy level to play so I allow them.  Apparently, running around the house doesn't cross their minds.  Keeping the body & mind active at their own pace keeps the immune system working too.

    6. A brief warm bath.  There are baby bath soaps with menthol or mint like J&J and Teddy's Choice which aroma with warm water acts like a vaporizer.

    7. Keeping the head elevated during sleep, and tucking them nicely in their blankets.

    8. Lotsa hugs and kisses, and mommy-time (with the thermometer and Puff on the side).

If my daughter's nose is stuffed up, I hard boil an egg, than wrap it in a washcloth (for babies) and then put it on her nose for a few seconds several times. This warms up the surface of the nose (also it's good to do the same just about the nose between eyebrows), without burning it. The egg is great because it keeps the heat for a while, so I can do this several times with fair intervals ( a minute or so).

Very effective for relieving stuffed nose!

A good alternative to saline drops is breastmilk.

In Canada this is not used often, all pediatricians thought I'm crazy when I mentioned this. But in Europe this is actually a common method.

Breastmilk has very strong antibacterial qualities, and is good for stuffed nose or that yellow stuff in the eyes of most newborns.

Worked well for us. My naturapath agrees too.

Thanks, Anna, for the wonderful tips.  I learned something new today!  It does make a lot of sense.  Awesome.
