Can a mother produce enough milk to feed a set of twins or triplets?  And can this amount satisfy them like for a singleton?  How has your experience proved right or otherwise?

    Hi,

I know you posted this a long time ago, so you may not still need the answer, but just wanted to share my experience.

One of my twins was not able to latch, so I ended up nursing one, and pumping for the other.  What helped is that I rented a hospital grade pump (from Shoppers Home Health) for a month to make sure it would work, and then I was fortunate enough to borrow a pump.  Otherwise, the pump is definitely worth the investment.  The MOST important thing is that you need to take care of yourself, otherwise you will not produce enough milk.  That means drinking enough, eating enough, and hopefully getting enough rest.  Not easy with multiples, but it can work to nurse both if you can take care of yourself.  I was able to pump until my babies were 8.5 months.  I stopped at that point because it was hard to fit in pumping time between chasing babies, feeding them, changing them, laundry, etc!

    Hope this helps,

    Leanne

Wow, that's DEDICATION - I truly admire you for that.
My little girl took 5-6 weeks to latch so I pumped for those weeks, and it was HARD. I can't imagine how much harder it is when you have more than one! Kudos to you for doing it for almost 9 months!

You're right - the right breastpump makes all the difference. I initially rented a Medela Symphony and after two weeks I bought the Freestyle (the theory at that time was that if I pumped for 3 months, it would pay for itself instead of the money going towards the rental).

Wow!  Did your diet also had to be a little bit more than usual for the needed calories?
