Is it safe for a toddler to eat the dog's food?

Some of you may have dogs at home and your toddler may have been curious how that very nice smelling food would taste like.  My friend recently phoned me that her toddler ate some of their dog's food and is anxious if this would be fatal and if the kid would develop some canine tendencies (kidding!)  But seriously, is it safe or to some extent acceptable to "accidentally" eat or snack on some dog food?  Reading the label it would seem so.  What's your take?

Can't be a good idea to eat from the dog dish.  I used to keep my dogs dishes clean - washing them after each meal but that's low on my priorities now.  I don't like my daughter near the dog dishes - considering the bacteria plus there's another concern.  Most dogs don't like to share their food.   Not a good idea for a toddler to be curious about the dogs' food.   That said, good quality dog food and cookies shouldn't be unhealthy.  My husband jokes that our dogs diet - based on the ingredient list is better than his with the blueberries, flax, salmon etc.  Keep in mind that there's less regulation and ad standards for dog food.  And I'll never forget the Melamine scandal where dogs/cats died from kidney failure caused by contaminated dog food ingredients.

Thank you for your comments and insight.  Its amazing how healthy dog food actually is considering its ingredients.  Sometimes I wonder if my baby is eating enough compared to the canine next door.  Haha!  Safe for humans - yeah, not too sure if this is something absolutely right.

Oh, that melamine contamination of pet food - that was reported years ago, right?  They did a massive recall in the States.  Had something to do with some vegetable proteins and wheat gluten having been mixed with that resin material/chemical.  Now how the hell did that happen?

How did you manage having a dog in the house and an infant or toddler.  It must be pretty tough, is it?  Did you have safety and health concerns?

Was it really gross?  I thought some of it really smelled good and flavorful like human food.  A little intense perhaps.

As a toddler my fiancee was constantly in the cupboard eating the dog treats....I guess it was closer to the ground and easy access for him. So everytime he went to grandma's he was busted in there. They even took pictures of him getting busted w/ the entire box and cookies in his mouth.

    He survived it...lol

My toddler ate cat food recently.  No harm done.  Not that I'd encourage the behaviour...

Leia  just recently started "trying" cat and dog food at friends house.  Really, this was not a yummy item on her snacking list and she is still standing.   I do recall as a little girl eating doggy chocolates with an old mate of mine.  These babies are just like we were, resiliant.
    Happy snacking babies.

I was at a mom's group recently and apparently there was an article in the Toronto Star (I couldn't find a link) that stated the leading cause of salmonella for children was eating food from a pets dish.

Not sure how accurate that is but thought I would share...
