I was taking Preg-Vit (prescription prenatal vitamins) for 1 year after birth (my OB suggested I continue taking these). I'm now taking the Jamieson prenatal vits (though not as regularly) - Zoey is still nursing at 16 months.

I've had no problems so far.

I'm taking Jamieson pre-natal too and baby seems fine as well.  I would think they would adjust anyway even if it's a day or two of fussiness.

I took Materna for atleast a year after my son was born, then switched to a normal multi vitamin when i ran out one month...Im thinking of starting the prenatals again just for the added folic acid and stuff

I have continued to take the same prenatal vitamins that I did before and during pregnancy (store brand).  I haven't found there is any correlation to fussiness in my babe.

Ok, I am officially changing my comment. I went back on the materna and Riley suddenly started having painful, gassy poops. Explosive like when he was a baby...which I was told by my Dr was normal. Obviously its not because as soon as I stopped taking them his stomach started to calm down again. So YES they can make a baby fussy cause it can hurt their tummy!!! Im going to try and find out why

    Hey Kim,
I was told by a nurse that Materna is not that good because it's not easy to digest among other things.

When I was pregnant I took Materna for one month and it made very nauseous I took a one from the organic store and I was fine. Then my logical brain decided maybe it wasn't the Materna, maybe it was just timing.  I took Materna again and it made me sick, got off and was fine...

so maybe your son's reaction is related to the type of multivitamin you are taking.

    Hi Lori.

You may anxious but prenatal vitamins are safe and beneficial during breastfeeding. In fact, you need to supplement with the higher nutritional need to keep up with the nutrients that should be available in your milk for the baby, taking into account healthy diet too.

In correlation with fussiness, it has not been clearly established.  I have not stumbled upon any literature to support prenatal vitamins causing fussiness, and my doctors said it could be other things like developments - growth spurts, teething, gas, etc.  However, they also said that extra vitamins and minerals is not a good idea, e.g. additional calcium (aside from your regular milk intake) or iron tablets.  It could also be that the body's absorption of the vitamins may not be enough or the amount of milk insufficient.  But like anything else in this world, please discuss with your healthcare provider.  You guys have the details.

To share a bit of experience like the other ladies, I took prenatal vitamins during breastfeeding.  I was also taking coffee once in a while during that time.  And that same theory about fussiness and coffee can be read anywhere. Some moms have claimed that taking coffee caused fuss but no doctor or expert studies have proven likewise.  At least from my limited resource.  May we know the brand of prenatal vitamins you're taking?

I was convinced their fussiness was more of other things.  Materna and that Costco store brand with the same exact ingredients/content as Materna but utterly cheaper (I threw out the bottle long before I could write it down, geez!) - were good for me, like I didn't experience any side effects.  However, I had overwhelming difficulty with Materna on my 3rd pregnancy.  I stopped taking these supplements after weaning and immediately reverted to regular multi-vitamins. Hope this helps, and may your baby give you some peace and quiet at least once in a while.
