    Hi everyone

I have been using the baby-led weaning (www.babyledweaning.com) with my son and had to share since we are loving it!! BLW is basically introducing babies to actual solid food at the age of 6 months, and skipping purees and spoon feeding entirely.

I began rice cereal at 5 months with my son, as advised by my pediatrician, since he was spitting up a lot. I have always for some reason felt uncomfortable about the whole cereal thing in general. We tried, he hated the spoon, but didn't seem to mind the cereal. But I am a firm believer in "help me to do it myself' and so the spoon-feeding, although cute and of course, a major milestone complete with video footage, was something that did not quite seem right to me. Why couldn't we figure out a way for my fully capable child to ENJOY mealtimes, and be treated like one of the rest of us at the table, instead of having a spoon full of unidentifiable food put in his mouth for him and the excess wiped off his face with said spoon? Enter - BLW. It just makes sense. Read the book - it's about 11 bucks on e-readers and is available at amazon.ca or chapters. It is a super quick and easy read, and I promise you too will see that this method of feeding your child just makes sense.

So far, after about a week and a half of BLW, my son has had chunks of turkey, green beans, cucumber, apple slices, sweet potato, pita bread, toast fingers, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, cheese, and chicken. Maybe a few I am forgetting. He LOVES it. At this stage not a lot actually goes down his throat but he is learning quickly and it is really a very fascinating learning processes to witness.

How does your baby do it?  Does your baby have teeth?

I used BLW on my son. We did start for the first month (at 6 months) with puree veggies and fruits and then I moved on very quickly to solid food. Now I must add that my son sprouted his first 2 teeth at 5 months and had a full set of teeth at 12 months.

I think that BLW is great!! Christian loved learning to chew solid food and he also learned early that large pieces of food make him gag and how to use this fingers to take food out of his mouth if it was making him choke.

He is 2 and a 1/2 now and I have never had to cut his grapes in 1/2 like I see a lot of my friends do for their children because he learned to manipulate food at a young stage. I also think it is great as it teachs the kids what the full feeling feels like so they don't over eat.

I'm going to be using BLW on our 2nd child that is due in Jan.

    Hi Janne

He actually does have two bottom teeth - which came in at about 4 1/2 months. But it doesn't matter, apparently, since they don't actually need teeth for BLW. Their gums and jaw strength are enough to manipulate most foods, although things like carrots etc should be steamed at least in the beginning.

    Hi Adrienne

I am so glad you have had success with BLW! My son LOVES it, to the point that we can no longer sit him at or near the table without having a full plate of food for him - lol! He has progressed quickly although I sometimes think he is over-confident - and I feel that because he already has teeth he bites off huge chunks and often, when he cannot figure out how to swallow or spit it out, he gets a little upset until my husband or I pluck it out of his mouth. So I have started leaving things in bigger chunks (a whole orange as opposed to slices) so he can gum it a bit before chomping. It's all a learning experience for us --  but a fun one! I LOVE the variety of food he is able to eat and that he can have such a balanced diet in each meal instead of having one or two veg or fruit for a meal in a puree.

Any advice for the big chunks?

    Thanks!

    Michelle

    PS congrats on your second!

    Amazing!
Thank Michelle so much for posting this... i had not idea but now everything makes sense!!!
i gave my little girl banana for the first time that way, just let her suck at it and she loved it but as soon as i started giving her the banana as a puree she started hating it. i also try chicken, raw apple and butter squash but even though she would eat it that way (or try) i was feeling a little guilty and even embarrassed to say it to anyone because i thought i was being irresponsible (you know, with the chocking hazard) my 7 months old stop eating solids a few weeks ago (we started the introduction to solids at 5 months) and I have try so many recipes but now i realize the problem is not the flavor, is the way i'm giving it to her!!! I even remember the day i made chicken soup for her and i let her try a piece of chicken... she loved it but as soon as i try to give her the puree chicken soup she closed her month and didnt eat it.

I see. Thanks Carolina for your sharing. I guess it depends on the food and his interest. (ha.ha)

Hi!  I would love to revitalize this topic!  My DD is turning 6 months next week and I am planning on doing BLW with her because it just makes sense to me.

Is anyone just starting BLW or has been doing it for a few weeks / months now?  I'd love to hear your stories and the types of foods you started with :)
