Cutting baby nails

I am hoping someone will have a suggestion about how to safely maintain finger & toe nails on infants.

I had been using a nail file right after birth but that takes forever & only works if the baby is sleeping.  Then I graduated to nail clippers & ended up clipping his finger too, to my complete horror!!!  Now I'm just scared to touch them, but I have to or else he's going to carve his beautiful face to smitherenes.

I've heard bite them off, but I'm scared to bite him - he's very squirmy & after my nail clipper incident, I don't trust myself.  Help!

    Hi Caroline,
there is an open topic on this discussion at http://www.lifewithababy.com/Default.aspx?pageId=288220&mode=MessageList&eid=255533

Have you thought of using the little baby scissors with the rounded end to cut the nails. This way you don't have to worry about sharp edges. You can get them at walmart, safety superstore, zellers, dearborn (so basically in most stores)

    good luck.

Thanks Claire - did a quick search to see if someone had posted this topic & didn't find it, so thanks for the link.  I've heard of those scissors, didn't realize they were rounded, I will have to check them out.

Don't be scared about biting the nails. I have been biting my son's nails since he was born and have never bitten him. He is getting more squirmy now so I get them when he is playing or even while he is sleeping! And I do the same for the toe nails, which may seem gross but he's only 4 months old so its not like his feet get dirty!
