My baby is now 3, and her paediatrician has said we need to take her for her first dentist and optometric appointments.

Any recommendations in the Thornhill/ Maple area, near Thornhill Woods?

I would highly recommend Dr. Mel Tanen at Yonge and Uplands (just south of Hwy 7).  He is a great dentist, his hygenists have been fantastic with our son, as well as with us, and the rates are quite good (if your benefit plan doesn't cover 100%, or if it is based on outdated ODA billing rates, this can be significant).  Dr. Tanen's phone # is 905-889-2181.

We go to the optometrist at the corner of Thornhill Woods Dr and Rutherford.  His name is Dr. Sharma and the practice is called Thornhill Eye Care.  He is excellent and has incredibly good "bed-side manner."  He is just very kind and really explains everything.  He even came in on a stat holiday to see my husband because he had an eye infection that Dr. Sharma wanted to make sure was responding to the medication.  All of the staff in his office are friendly and helpful as well.  His number is 905-731-7311.

He does see a lot of children but I know he doesn't feel it is necessary to see them this young.  I am sure he would be happy to speak with you about it.

    Best wishes, Leanne

There seems to be a new large facility at Dufferin and Major Mackenzie in the Starbucks and Pizza Pizza end of the plaza on the north-east cnr of the intersection. I suppose they are all Children's Dentists or provide dental services for kids.  I am not recommending them-- just saying that I know there is a new healthcare facility in the area catering to children's dental needs.

We brought our 3 year old to the dentist for the first time a few months ago and highly recommend: http://www.bcdentalcare.ca/ChildrensDentistry/tabid/496/Default.aspx

He was NOT happy to go....The dentist (a woman and I don't have her name off hand) was great, patient and excellent. She calmed him, explained things and showed him everything in the room.. and he got to look in the drawer for a little toy after.

It also helped to get that Dora goes to the dentist book and read it before! ha
