How do you keep up with work?

Going back to work may be a challenging transition from your maternity leave.  So how do you manage your new work-life balance?  Is it possible to ask for lesser days or hours at work without a cut from your pay?  Do you keep up with your previous assignments or lay back a bit?

    Hi Nina,

It's been a year for me since I've gone back, and I would say it took me about 2 solid months to adjust to a different type of routine, but I think it's all about self-discipline. I would never leave work on time, was always very much dedicated to finishing all tasks.

Now I just plan my work day a bit differently since I never got less hours and cannot work from home. I think it's possible to have a balanced work day and enjoy your home and family if you are well organized and set your daily objectives for the next day prior to leaving work in the evening. This way - at least for me - the sanity is there, and there are no issues with being over stressed. I can also push back newly assigned tasks since I can always speak to what I'm currently working on.

I would actually say that being a working mom made me much more responsible and organized at both work and home. It makes you feel good too - the fact that you are juggling more responsibilities than before.

    Hope that helps!

Its amazing how being a new mom, despite its demands, has kept you organized and keen.  Did the company you're working for offered any type of flexibilities when you got back?

Thanks Nina - I think it was about time to organize my daily activities a bit better, I was so bad with time before! My company didn't offer flexibilities upfront, but whenever I asked for time off because my son wasn't feeling his best, I never had problems. I have since changed my employment, and what I see with my current company is the same type of support, even from people that don't have kids. I try not to push it with working from home days, but if needed, they are very flexible.

Now that you mentioned it, would you say that working from home would be much more advantageous and beneficial for you?
