Is it safe to have my teeth cleaned during pregnancy or when breastfeeding?

My dentist refused to clean my teeth when he learned that I was breastfeeding.  Told me to go back after I have weaned.  Is there any fact to support his claim that possible bacteria or infection from the procedure may be ingested and could harm the milk?

I know this is really late for responding :) but I figured it might help other moms.

Your dentist was wrong!  Keeping your gums healthy is important all the time but even more so during pregnancy as the tissues swell.  Pregnant women are more susceptible to gingivitis.  My OB recommended seeing a dentist at least twice for cleaning during pregnancy.

Sandra is right--my dentist told me the same.
