Long naps

Wednesday, July 23, 2008 8:10 PM | Elena

Hi,

My 3 month old baby seems to take only short naps (30-45min). Rarely she would sleep for an hour or two when she is outsided.  She wakes up tired, and need another nap within an hour. Any suggestions? I know that every baby is different, and this might just be her "style", however, if anyone experienced that, i would like to know if their kids outgrew it. Thank you.

    Hi Elena,
When Katelyn was three months, she did pretty much the same thing. but that is because I was still nursing and feeding on demand so she would need to nurse about every 2 hours. Nursing would take about half an hour, she would fall asleep for about 45 mins (which is one sleep cycle) when it got close to about 45 mins, it would basically be time for her to nurse again, so when I would listen for her, before she got completely awake and when I heard her fussing I would pick her up, nurse her and she would fall back asleep while nursing. She would then sleep for about another 45mins to 1 hour and then she would be fine for that nap.

Also, in the summer I use block out curtains because it's so bright outside, she could be transitioning from light sleep to deep sleep and gets stimulated by the things in her room and wake up.

Have you read the book "Secrets of the baby wisperer"? I read it when Katelyn was younger, it doesn't apply to her anymore so you are free to have it if you would like to read it. It helped me a great deal.

    Hope that helps,
    Alexia

    Hi Elena,
My daughter is almost 11 months now and when she was your baby age I had the same problem, I would say it's all developmental and she will learn how to sleep longer and not to catnap. It goes away by itself around 8-9 months (in my case) Later she will have 2 long naps during the day, but now just wait;))

    Hi Elena,
My son Thomas is the king of short naps -- now that he's nearly 7 months he is starting to take longer naps. He was always a 45 min napper, now we get 1 hr or ever 1.5 hrs and on a rare occasion 2 hrs. It is great! I found it hard to get anything done other than shower, eat, during his naps a few months ago but now I can actually nap too! When his naps were so short we did have to put him back down often - 3 or 4 times a day. I also decided that anything less than 45 mins was not a full nap, so I'd try to put him back down if he woke up earlier. Sometimes it worked. Hang in there.
