We'll be traveling to the Dominican this summer for a wedding. My son will be 11 mths at that time and will still need to be in a car seat. What I'm not sure of is how this gets transported? Do we take it with us on the plane or does it need to be checked? Will we need to install it on the taxi/bus when we get there? Sorry if this is a silly question...

    Hi Tami,
I traveled to the Caribbean with Katelyn when she was 16 months, If you bought an seat, you may be able to put the car seat on the extra seat, but if you did not purchase a seat for your son, then the baby will be in your hand so I don't know how that will work with the car seat.  Also, the rules in the Caribbean are different from here, so don't count on anyone putting your car seat in the taxi or on the shuttle bus from the airport.  Most of the parents and babies that I saw on the trip were holding the baby in their hand.

I hope some of the other moms who travelled when thier baby was under one will be able to answer this question with more relevant information.

Have fun on your trip :-)

    Hi Tammy,

We took Patty to Cuba in January and did not take a car seat.  She sat on our laps on the plane, on the bus and in taxis.  Their laws did not require that she be strapped in.  It's all a matter of safety and what you feel comfortable with.

If you want the safety of a a car seat, take the one that fits into your stroller - and take the stroller.  Both will be allowed to be used up to the actual door of the plane.  If you have purchased a seat for your son, you will check the stroller at the door of the plane and you can use the carseat on the plane.  Check with the airline, they will determine how you strap him in.  I imagine it would be rear facing using the lap belt.  If your son will be sitting on your lap for the flight, you will simply check both the car seat and stroller at the door of the air plane.

Whether or not you have purchased a seat for your son, tell the agent when you check your bags that your stroller and or car seat will need to be checked at the door of the plane.  They will provide special tags.  When you arrive in the DR, your stroller and or car seat will unloaded and may be picked up with your luggage.

Most car seats can be used in any car using the lap belt in the back seat.  You would have to consult your car seat guide.  Of course all of this is provided that your son still fits into his original baby carseat and that you can take/have a stroller that holds a car seat.

    Thanx/Colleen

    Hi,

It all depends on the laws of the country that you are visiting. Check with your travel agent and they will advise you if you need a car seat when you arrive in the DR. If you are renting a car and you can request that the car rental company give you a car seat and they usually will charge you a little bit for it. Sometimes that is a better option then taking it all the way you. Remember that you will have luggage, diaper bag(make sure you take one and fill it to the brim, its the one extra item that you can take on the plane!!!!!), stroller and your baby----believe me adding a car seat to that can make your travels pretty hectic. I would highly recommend a baby carrier--I had my Ergo baby carrier and it was nice to be free of the stroller on some days when it just seemed like too much to take care of!!

Remember that you don't need all the comforts of home when you are travelling and that you little will barely notice the difference!!!

    Have a great trip!!

    Cheers,
    Nittu

    Hi Tami.

We travelled to Nova Scotia this past July with our son who was 4 months at the time.  We flew with Air Canada.  We dropped off our infant car seat at the airport check in counter and they wrapped it with plastic. The car seat does not get tossed with the baggage, as it's handled separately.  Also,  with regards to the taxi, we mounted the car seat on our way to and from the airport - so that's not a problem.

With all due respect, car-seats are about safety, not comfort. Traveling with car-seats is a PITA, but necessary. If you do not have a seat for your baby (if you do, use the car-seat in the plane) then it can be checked at the gate. As a previous poster mentioned, a car-seat stroller combo is great if you can do it. If your baby will be too old for an infant seat, you just gotta carry the car-seat. Use an airport cart. there are also backpack carriers for them, like this: http://www.amazon.com/Childress-Ultimate-Seat-Travel-Black/dp/B0009RNXNA/ref=pd_sbs_ba_1

Also, you should learn how to install the seat yourself so you can do it in taxis, etc. It is a skill every parent should have. A good car-seat technician should be able to teach you how.

I also recommend you look into some sort of carrier for your trip...it is great as an alternative or an addition to a stroller! The Beco and Ergo are great ones.

    Hi Everyone.

We will be taking a vacation to the Dominican next month with our 8 month old.  I  am fully aware of the malaria concern and will be taking the precautions such as clothing and netting in the evening hours.  I am also concerned about the water, which is advised not to drink.  My worry is when I need to bath Julian as I want to ensure that no water is ingested?  This will be difficult since babies constantly have their hands in their mouth.  Has anyone travelled to the Dominican with their little one?  Can you suggest any precautionaries?

    Thank you.

Hi Jennifer we travelled to Mexico with Katelyn last year and bath time became a two person job. We brought an inflatable ducky bath with us (got it at Walmart) and filled it with bottled water for bath time. There was one day when I washed her with the regular water while my hubby held her and then rinsed her off.  Then I washed her face and hands with bottled water.  (which was soo much easier, did this on the last day)

Bath time will not be the same as at home... when we were bathing her in Mexico it was just for cleansing, it was not like at home where we put her in the tub and she splashed and played. This was a five minute wash for cleansing purposes only.  I was a bit paranoid about the water, but I find if both parents are available to help at bath time it's quite easy to avoid water being ingested.

Have a safe and healthy trip,
    Claire
