International flight and size of car seat?

Has anyone flown on an international (to Europe) flight recently and taken on their car seat for their little one?  Did you have any trouble?

We have a Britax Marathon and I'm concerned it might be too big and don't want to end up at the airport and not be able to take it on the plane.

    Thanks!

Hi Jane - My daughter has travelled on over 14 planes, mainly to England. Each time we didnt take on her car seat, she first travelled when she was 2 months old and just recently, we went again in August when she was 3. do you mind if i ask why you are thinking to take the car seat on the plane?  we did take a car seat but we checked it in, so we had it on arrival in England. How old is your child? i hope that this info has helped and if you need any further info let me know - as we are hardened travellers. I even travelled with my 3 year old and 2 month old - BY MYSELF - i thought i must be nuts but it was fine. Thanks Jenn

We have booked a seat for her as we are travelling on to Egypt so didn't fancy 15 hours with her on our laps at 10 months old.   I wasn't sure if they would allow her in a seat at that age without a car seat. to restrain her.

    Thanks for your reply Jenn!

Wow you are a brave woman Jenn, travelling alone with young kids!

Regarding checking in of the car seat - do you have to secure and pack it in any way so that it doesn't get damaged, or is it checked in as a special / fragile item?

I also have the same question. We are travelling to Europe for the holidays with our 3 year old and 6 month old. I would much prefer to have the 3 year old strapped into his car seat - both because it will be easier on us and because it is familiar to him and I feel like he'll sleep better in it. We also have a Britax Marathon. If you find out of you're allowed to bring it on, please let me know!

I travelled to the Middle East when my daughter was 17 months old...I didn't bring my britax car seat for fear of it getting damaged in transit (unfortunately my stroller did get damaged) I opted to purchase a carseat  when I reached my destination due to the stop overs and that it gets checked in as carry-on luggage. I however wish I had purchased a used car seat to take along due to the cost of purchasing a new seat ($275.US was the cheapest)

If the child is under two, you should check with the airline website to see if it is mandatory to use a carseat if you purchased a seat for your child.

I would check the airline's website (or call their customer service) to check the size of their seats. I believe that most (if not all) Britax car seats are airline certified, so I imagine that means they are going to fit in the seats.

I would try to gate-check the car seat (if possible) not send it in to the hold as luggage as it may be damaged. If gate-check is not possible, you may have to buy a seat for you baby :(

Also, I saw the gogo Kids travelmate that seems pretty handy and might be useful - it's a lightweight wheeled contraption to put your car seat on and essentially turn it in to a stroller!
It's available at Safety Superstore, and details are on the go go Kids website.

    Product description:

The gogo Kidz Travelmate is a convenient and safe attachment for a variety of convertible/toddler car seats. Instead of carrying your car seat and child through an airport, they can now be wheeled through a crowd!

The gogo Kidz is easily mounted or removed and it allows one hand to be free. It features 5” razor wheels and telescopic handle, and weighs 5 lbs. The quick release wheels provide extra clearance for storage and smaller x-ray machines.

I actually bought a gogo Kidz Travelmate and never used it. I thought we would need to put my son in a carseat when we went on the airplane by law but never had to. If anyone is interested in renting or borrowing it, let me know. No point in keeping it and not using it :)
